CXCP 1st Independence Virtual 5K/50K Race/Ride REGISTRATION IS OPEN!

Race Registration Opens: 5/5/20 @ 8am
Race Registration Closes: 7/31/20 @ 8pm
Race is ACTIVE: 7/4/20 @ 7am through 7/31/20 @ 8pm

Cost: No cost but participants are encouraged to DONATE :-)

The Coronavirus Pandemic has changed our lives and altered how we tackle each day, but it has not changed our will or our desire to build community and camaraderie. In our fight to battle this virus, the need for social distancing is paramount. Due to these restrictive circumstances, the Claremont High School Cross Country Team fundraising event, the Claremont Village Freedom 5K Run/Walk Kids l K Fun Run, was cancelled for 2020.

There is a silver lining, however. This year you can still test your abilities and conditioning by participating in the CXCP Independence Virtual Race which will support the team. Who has not suffered from "cabin fever" these last months at home? You have walked your streets and have run around your neighborhoods to stay active and healthy.  Think about it: you are probably in better condition right now than last year at this time. So why not test yourself and your conditioning? If you prefer biking, the event is also supporting those interested in riding a 50K.

So, what is a Virtual Race?
A Virtual Race is a physical race from any location you choose. You can run/walk/bike on a treadmill or stationary bike, jog around a park or even down the sidewalk of your street! You mark the starting line, you run/walk/bike your race, at your pace, at the time of your choosing. This CXCP Independence Virtual Race will last the entire month of July! Take the dog with you and please encourage your kids to participate in the kids 1K.  Dress up in your favorite Independence Day attire! Participation in this event is completely free! Participate anywhere you want to. You can run, walk, or bike indoors on a treadmill or outdoors. Your Time, Your Pace, Your Community.

Building Community
During the entire month of July, log your virtual race by taking screenshots showing your distance traveled and time with apps like Strava, Garmin or Zwift. Go to the CXCP Independence Virtual Race website, post photos and share your achievement with your family and friends on your social media platforms. Connect with other runners/bikers and friends on the Virtual Race platform and challenge them to see if they can meet their goals and beat your times. Have fun with it and share your experience.

Your participation benefits the Claremont HS Cross Country Program. Should you wish to donate to the team, any amount is appreciated.  Donations from this event will help to support more than l00 student athletes who participate in this inclusive yet elite athletic program at Claremont High School.  Proceeds from the event help keep the program accessible to all students by subsidizing costs for uniforms, meet entries, transportation, and other support services.

Next CRITICAL Booster Meeting - April 22nd @ 6:15pm on ZOOM

CHS Track Season - UPDATE

Hi, Parents and Athletes:

With the track season cancelled and no official practices to go to until April 14 at the earliest, I feel terrible that I could not meet with you all at least one more time. Going to practice and seeing all of you is one of the best parts of my day. I look forward to it every day, and after it’s done, I already miss it and start looking forward to the next practice.

Until our next practice together, I will send a Remind message on Sunday nights with the workouts to do for the week. If possible, captains will schedule some workouts together during the week. Please check your Remind messages. Also, as new information is made available, running together may not be possible. The main thing is to follow the workout plan.

In these times of uncertainty, worry, and confusion, let’s try to bring some normalcy to our lives. Running and training is a great stress reliever. Yes, doing schoolwork and staying healthy are the first priorities, but your children are athletes too and they need to get out:  continuing to do an activity they love can help them cope with stress they might be feeling.

Your kids have worked very hard to get into top shape during track season, and I don’t want them to stop running and training.  This crisis and virus will pass in a month or two, I hope. Of course, we don’t know when.  But whenever we get to start up again for the cross country season, we don't want to start our fitness and training all over. I know the kids want Claremont Cross Country to be tops in League, CIF, and State, and to earn a chance to go to nationals. That work can start now. So, please continue to stay fit so that when we do start for cross country, we can bring those dreams to life. It can be easy to start to get down with the uncertainty in all our lives right now, having a goal to shoot for when this is over will help us all get through it.

Stay motivated, start a journal, and keep track of your weekly mileage. Buy a GPS watch and use Strava to track your mileage. This will be over soon, and you will want to be in shape when we start up again. 
To the Seniors: I’m so sorry that you may not get to hit high school PR goals that you had set. But, you have a lot of running left to do in your lifetimes, and you don't want to start your college career behind in your training. That is no fun. 

So, keep on running and training. Keep on checking in with each other for encouragement, friendship, and team spirit. 

Again, I am sorry I could not meet with you one more time. Looking forward to our first practice together will get me through the next few weeks or however long it is until we run as a team again.

2020 - CXCP Important Summer Dates!

Hi Cross Country Parents,

I know we are in the middle of track season but... I need to give you some important dates for the upcoming summer so you can plan ahead.

The biggest change for 2020-2021 is: 

Dead Period is now shared by the entire school for all of the sports and will be July 17th -31st, no official practices to be held during this time.
Due to the change of the Dead Period, we only have one practice (Saturday, August 1st) between the Dead Period and the team going to XC camp (August 3rd-7th).  That will be a Mandatory Practice for all XC athletes.
Official XC practice starts on August 17th;  please no vacations after this date. 

Our first meet is Friday, Sept 4th  - Cool Breeze Invitational

Here’s a breakdown of the Summer XC Schedule for 2020-2021:

May 11th Spring Cross Country Training starts 3:15pm M-F, Sat 7:30am

May 19th or 21st  Mandatory Parent Meeting 6:00pm in the theater room #105

June 15th -July 16th Summer Practice M-W-F 3:00pm, T-Th 6:00am, Sat 7:30am
July 16th  Wrightwood XC camp $$$ and paperwork due

July 17th - July 31st  DEAD PERIOD/ VACATIONS
August 1st Sat Mandatory Practice and final camp info

August 3rd -7th  XC Camp in Wrightwood

August 10th -25th  Practice 7:30am Mon -Sat

August 17th - 1st day of Mandatory XC Practice (PLEASE NO VACATIONS)

August 26th - First day of school

  • July 3rd and 4th  Freedom 5K in Claremont
  • Sept 3rd and 4th Cool Breeze Invitational in Pasadena

Freedom 5K Sponsorship Committee Meeting TONIGHT!

Dear CXCP Families,

This is a reminder that we have a Freedom 5K Sponsorship Committee Meeting tonight at CHS at 6:15pm in the 800 Quad Conference Room.

We need approximately 5 volunteers to help me to contact local businesses to request their financial support for the 2020 Freedom 5K.

We already have about 20 ongoing sponsors, so 5 volunteers to share contacting our sponsors means each person will be responsible for communicating with approximately 4 local businesses. That contact includes sending them an email (which is a form letter already written) to let them know about the sponsorship levels for this year, following up with phone calls to ensure they complete the sponsorship forms and submit their donations by the April 1 deadline, staying in touch until they submit completed forms and payments, and reporting on status of sponsors to the sponsorship chair.

We also need to do more to bring in more sponsors. Even if you cannot volunteer one hour per week, if you can bring in one new sponsor, that is incredibly helpful. If you or a friend owns a local business, I can get you information soon for requesting their support as sponsors.

Not surprisingly, costs for our program keep rising: that great food we had at the banquet (and which cost us parents only $5/each) was a little bit more than Bucca but well worth it; travel costs are always going up; camp costs a little more each year; taco truck food after league meets; the list goes in.

All this means we have to use this one big fundraiser to raise even more money.

Please show up for this important meeting. Think of it as one hour per week (if that) to help the team greatly.

CXCP Boosters Needs Your HELP!!!

Dear CXCP Parents,

Last Wednesday night, we had our first CXCP Boosters meeting of 2020.  A whopping seven people were in attendance.  We bring this to your attention, not as a joke, but as a concern.  At the Cross Country Banquet in December, Jeff and I acknowledged how important the Boosters and parent volunteer support is for our program.  We wish for this to continue so that we can maintain the level of commitment and financial capital needed to fund the many amazing experiences this program offers.  We understand that Cross Country is probably the last thing on your minds, with track season just getting started, and that’s understandable.  However, we lost a large percentage of our committee leaders and coordinators to this year’s graduating class.  It’s time for the next group of parent volunteers to step up and take the reins.  

We know we can count on your support and time during the Freedom 5000, 24 Hour Relay and Cool Breeze Invitational events, and I appreciate that commitment.  We also need your support filling the following key positions:

·         Parent Volunteer Coordinator

·         Freedom 5K Sponsorship Coordinator

·         Freedom 5K Race Director

It is vital that we get parent volunteers to commit to these positions now, while we still have our current coordinators in place.  They know how to do the job right, know the contacts and can easily teach the next person, making for a smooth transition.  Plus these three positions are directly tied to our biggest fundraiser, The Claremont Village Freedom 5000.  Work has already began on preparing for this event and help is needed.

At this last Boosters meeting, one of our parents shared that another CHS team banquet charged $30 a person for a simple spaghetti dinner…we charged $5 for an amazing catered dinner and all of our student athletes ate for free.  This was due in part to our booster reserves, directly tied to our fundraising efforts over the past years.  Please consider donating your time towards our future events, participate in one of our committees or even take an active role in becoming a coordinator/director.

We have such a strong group of parents with so many different talents and connections.  Let’s work together to support our Cross Country student athletes and build on this program.
